Why This Matters

The urgent need for clean water and sanitation in Nigeria

The Challenge

Poor access to improved water and sanitation remains a major contributing factor to high morbidity and mortality rates among children in Nigeria. As UNICEF reports, this challenge continues to devastate communities across the nation.

"We cannot defeat any of the infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation, and basic health care."
— Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary General

The Impact

  • Malaria, pneumonia, typhoid, diarrhea, and cholera contribute most to infectious disease deaths
  • Malaria caused approximately 125,000 child deaths in 2021
  • Nigeria has the highest number of pneumonia-related deaths globally (UNICEF)
  • Environmental factors severely affect both children and adults

Our Response

HIWWEST is a grassroots nonprofit organization committed to assisting the Nigerian government to address the fundamental problem of widespread lack of access to basic sanitation facilities, toilets, and safe water in rural communities.

We recognize that health is one of the fundamental rights of every child and adult. We cannot leave the government to combat open defecation alone. Through collaboration and dedicated action, we're working to meet the United Nations mandate to end open defecation by 2030.
