About HIWWEST

Who We Are

A grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming lives through access to clean water and sanitation across Nigeria

Our Mission

HIWWEST exists to tackle the growing challenge of sustainable water scarcity in indigenous communities through the provision of clean water and sanitation services.

We seek to mobilise action towards the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) focused on availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Canvass investments in infrastructure and sanitation facilities.

Ensure the protection and restoration of the degraded water-related ecosystems.

End the United Nations timelined Open Defecation, which leads to water pollution, the bane of mankind.

Our Vision

"Healthy citizens are the greatest asset of a country." - Winston Churchill

As the saying goes, Water is life. We envision a country where everyone has access to sustainable clean water and sanitation equalled to healthy citizens living above water-related killer diseases such as malaria, typhoid, cholera, and diarrhea.

The Challenge We're Addressing

Understanding the urgent need for clean water and sanitation in Nigeria

Poor access to improved water and sanitation remains a major contributing factor to high morbidity and mortality rates among children in Nigeria. According to UNICEF, this challenge continues to devastate communities across the nation, particularly affecting under-5 children who are most vulnerable to water-borne diseases.

The Devastating Impact

  • 125,000 child deaths from malaria in 2021 alone
  • One child dies every four minutes from preventable diseases
  • Nigeria has the highest number of pneumonia-related deaths globally (UNICEF)
  • Malaria, pneumonia, typhoid, diarrhea, and cholera are the leading causes of infectious disease deaths

"We cannot defeat any of the infectious diseases that plague the developing world until we have also won the battle for safe drinking water, sanitation, and basic health care."

— Kofi Annan, Former UN Secretary General

Environmental factors, particularly limited access to safe drinking water, have been identified as principal contributors to the high incidence of infectious diseases among Nigerian women, children, and adults. With Nigeria facing numerous security and developmental challenges, we recognize that government efforts alone cannot combat this crisis. That's why HIWWEST exists—to mobilize communities, resources, and expertise in the fight against open defecation and water-borne diseases.
